1) What is a plant growth regulator (PGR)? A plant growth regulator is a
substance that alters a plant's typical growth pattern. Many PGR's are hormones
that a plant produces internally, but when externally applied may accelerate
or retard a naturally occurring growth pattern.
2) What does gibberellic acid do? Gibberellic acid is a hormone found in
plants that promotes cell elongation (plant and root growth in length or
height). When externally applied it will increase the speed at which these
growth functions occur. In some crops, ie; cucumbers and blueberries, externally
applied gibberellic acid aids pollination in the absence of bees or during
periods of excessively high temperatures that may occur during the normal
period of pollination.
3) What does kinetin do? Kinetin is a hormone found in plants that promotes
cell division and triggers the plant's shift from the vegetative state to
the reproductive state. Externally applied kinetin will cause this shift
earlier than normal, thus increasing the fruiting locations on the plant.
Externally applied kinetin can alter a plant's height or in turf, cause the
grass to cover bare areas more quickly and completely.
4) What is the affect of using gibberellic acid together with kinetin? When
applied together these two PGR'S cause continued root growth and the transition
of the plant from the vegetative state to the reproductive stage of growth.
5) Do PGR's reduce the amount of fertilizer you need to use? No! Since PGR's
are designed to the plants growth pattern in order to affect increase yield,
you need adequate levels of nutrition to "feed" the plant's increased
productivity.
